"Richmond's Pancake Bell".

Ringing the Pancake Bell from Trinity Church tower just before 11:00am each Shrove Tuesday in one of Richmond's many cherished traditions and goes back hundreds of years to medieval times. The religious festival of Lent, which begins the following day, Ash Wednesday, was observed by fasting, (The eating of small amount of simple food) for the 40 days up to the festival of Easter.

The Pancake Bell is tolled to remind householders to use up thier eggs for the main meal of the day.
