The Mayor Making ceremony takes place at a meeting of the full Town Council and usually occurs on the second last Monday in May. The incoming Mayor is sworn in having given a Statutory Declaration of Acceptance of Office. The new Mayor then retires to the Mayor's Parlour where the official robing takes place. From this point onwards the new Mayor wears the Mayoral Chain when on official duty.

The ceremony takes place before approximately 200 people, many of whom are guests and members of the public from within the town. Usually ten places at the ceremony are reserved for members of the public and any person within the town is entitled to apply. A poster inviting applications is displayed on the Town Hall notice boards (outside the Town Hall and at the Nuns Close Car Park) in advance of the ceremony.
